Belief is the mastermind behind our actions. As Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or can’t, you’re right.” In other words, our only limit to excellence is our beliefs. Transforming a big dream or a great idea into a decision to act requires belief. Unfortunately, it’s easy to miss how our belief system influences our decision-making. Here is how this process works: When a thought comes to our mind, it goes to the conscious mind. Our conscious mind instructs our subconscious mind to take action, and this is where our beliefs and programing reside. Our belief system, built over years of experience, controls the decision-making and acts as a filter to our efforts. So our thoughts go nowhere, and no action is taken unless our beliefs support the idea. For example, growing up, I was taught to get good education, work in a big company, and starting a business is extremely risky. As a result, it took me years to decide to leave my job and start my own consulting. However, with positive affirmations, a growth mindset, and a support system, I finally made the switch. When we believe that we can grow and change, we understand that our efforts and hard work lead to higher achievement. Innovation and radical breakthroughs are impossible without belief and a growth mindset. Unfortunately, innovators are constantly challenged with limiting beliefs in response to their ideas. Spotting potential in unconventional ideas and unusual opportunities requires constant questioning of our limiting beliefs.
