The secret to living the dream is hidden in the purpose and what we do because of it. Purpose acts as a lighthouse to guide us in the journey to excellence. I like to share the story of two bricklayers here. A traveler came to visit two men laying bricks. He asked the first person what he was doing, and the person replied he was laying bricks. He asked the second person what he was doing, and the person replied he was building a cathedral. If you think about it, they were both doing the same thing. The first person was doing a job; however, the second person had a calling. We may be laying bricks every day, but if we can envision a cathedral, a higher calling, and a purpose for our work, we live a meaningful life. With this mindset, the purpose becomes a rallying cry to create value for all stakeholders. Therefore, it is essential to translate the purpose into excellence by carefully defining the vision, mission, objectives, and targets supported by the core values. In this journey, we must have absolute clarity of our value proposition and the customer needs. Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion. —Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric
